Through a partnership with Campus Crusade for Christ (Cru), King’s Domain seeks to combine multiple types of ministry opportunities — camp, college, youth, urban, children’s — to prepare students for the college campus and beyond.
Stripping away usual distractions and routine, King’s Domain Summer Project (KDSP) operates on the platform of a Christian summer camp, which serves as the equivalent of a job on a typical beach summer project.
Throughout the course of the summer — especially during training weeks — the schedule includes teaching from a variety of renowned speakers:
- Roger Hershey (Cru staff at Penn State University / Long-time Big Break keynote speaker)
- Ed Uszynski (Athletes in Action staff / IndyCC 2010 keynote speaker)
- Doug Pollock (Author of God Space / Adjunct Professor of Personal Evangelism at Cedarville University)
- David Newman (Pastor of Antioch / PhD., Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary)
- Wendel Deyo (President of King’s Domain / Former president of Athletes in Action / Former associate U.S. campus director of Campus Crusade for Christ / Former chaplain of the Cincinnati Bengals and Reds)
- Stephanie Zonars (Founder of Life Beyond Sport / Author)
In addition to the leadership training implied in the job description of a camp counselor, students spend time taking inventory of their strengths, gifting and callings, refining their understanding of how God created them uniquely to further His kingdom as they live for eternity.
KDSP is structured in hopes of this personal development and spiritual growth occurring within the context of Christ-centered community. Students are discipled, dig into the Word together, learn how to facilitate a Bible study, attend a local church, participate in small groups and pour into their peers.
And that’s just the beginning. Thanks to the many tiers of ministry within the camp itself, students are in position to build into not only their peers, but also teenagers and campers.
Middle school and high school students from local youth groups come to camp to serve as junior counselors, and those on KDSP have the opportunity to mentor these teenagers. Working alongside these students provides countless open doors for sharing the gospel and speaking truth into their lives.
Most of the campers are between the ages of 7–12 and come to King’s Domain from impoverished families living in inner-city Cincinnati. These kids receive scholarships to attend camp for free and have year-round support from tutors through Whiz Kids, a program run by City Gospel Mission. Although they spend only a few days each summer at King’s Domain, many say it is the highlight of their year because of the legacy of love left by full-time and summer staffers as they seek to meet the children’s physical and spiritual needs.
As an exercise in depending on the Lord, students who come on KDSP must raise support to cover the cost of food, housing, training resources and more. Although this may seem like a major obstacle to some, full-time staff members raise and past KDSP participants have raised support and have seen God’s faithfulness in the process. In addition, students may raise up to $1,000 (before taxes) over the minimum as a salary.
